Multiple Sclerosis: It is what it is. Or is it…?
By Curtis Aiken
(If you are wondering why I am writing about MS, check out our About page.)
Traditionally we are taught that multiple sclerosis is demyelination of the nerves. In layman’s terms this means that the protective coating (myelin) around the nerves in our body is like the protective plastic around the wire of the power cable plugged into your computer; this protective coating is being eaten away by your body like a mouse gnawing on your power cable. In our body this is called inflammation. When the myelin sheath eventually repairs it is scarred, much like a cut on your skin would heal but would leave a scar and the scars inhibit the electrical nerve flow. Over time the symptoms worsen due to the creation of more and more scars from relapses over the years; Multiple (many) Sclerosis (scars).
The cause of Multiple Sclerosis has never been determined by the medical profession. There are many theories out there and mine is no different, I am not going to claim it is fact but I can tell you that I am living my life as though it is fact and living this way has blessed my life.
Generally we are taught that inflammation is a bad thing. But in reality, the cause of the inflammation is the problem, the inflammation itself is the body’s health system functioning, not malfunctioning. Usually when we are feeling under the weather in any way it is not the viral invader but rather it is our body signalling to us that there is a problem and we need to take it easy so our ‘doctor within’ can repair us. For example:
Skin issues such as acne; this may be caused by your body trying to push unwanted oils, bugs or chemicals out through the largest organ the body has for detoxifying – the skin.
Fever; According to the book 7 Things Your Doctor Forgot to Tell You by Dr Warren Sipser and Andi Lew, the human body is at a perfect temperature for illness to survive so the body raises its temperature, or develops a fever, to break down the virus’ defences making it easier for the white blood cells to destroy it. Modern medicine however, teaches that fever is a bad thing, in opposition to the body’s natural intelligence. Reducing the fever prevents your body from being able to effectively fight the virus once again prolonging and potentially increasing the severity of the illness.
Cold/flu; The body eliminating a virus through nearly every opening we have.
Gastro; The body eliminating a virus through one particular opening, and occasionally through vomiting and sweating.
Muscle pain; this may be a symptom of toxicity, mineral deficiency or an injury. It is not something that should be treated with pain killers so the muscle may be used to the full extent of its capabilities as if it were healthy as this will only cause further damage.
Inflammation; The body’s way of fighting an infection
So, with consideration that symptoms we feel are our body’s way of communicating with our conscious mind that something is wrong, if we look beyond the inflammation causing the demyelination in cases of MS and instead look into the reason we became inflamed in the first place, the answers may become clearer.
I was wondering why MS is all about inflammation in the Central Nervous System but it is usually (if not always) localised in the spinal area. Why not the forearm or calf muscle, etc? If inflammation is in fact the body’s health system working hard at fixing and eliminating issues within, then the inflammation is not the problem, the question is, why is that area inflamed? If the body stores toxins around the spine in particular (and in fat cells, according to my research) then there would be a concentration of toxins around the spine, creating greater inflammation there than in other areas throughout the body. This inflammation is what damages the myelin sheath. Probably most people have this issue but only people who are directly affected by the inflammation being too close to specific nerves would show symptoms. Hence the term “Benign MS” I guess, when the specific nerves (that lead to our fingers, toes, eyes etc) aren’t damaged by the inflammation. After all, only about 10% of the nerves in our body are related to “feeling”. People who overcome MS cleanse their body of toxins; they make changes to their lifestyle by cleansing their diet and environment. One example is that many people with MS who practice yoga regularly in turn overcome MS, perhaps because many yoga poses dislodge toxins in the spine. There are some great poses in particular that may give an instant detoxifying feeling.
If this is the case, do MS drugs exacerbate the problem in the long run by putting more toxins into the body? Some drugs even prevent inflammation, but if inflammation is our health system functioning, what risks are we taking by stopping it from seeking, destroying and eliminating? Numbness etc. experienced is an unfortunate side effect but maybe the inflammation damaging the myelin is actually saving us from experiencing something much, much worse.
If this theory is correct, the disease could be renamed Single Sclerosis because if the body is detoxified, there won’t be multiple scars developed over time. It would actually not be an incurable disease at all, but rather it is simply toxicity. Nothing a few green juices and coffee enemas couldn’t take care of.
I wrote the following a while ago, before I came up with My Speculation but much of it is still relevant so I decided to include it.
This is what I know about curing MS…
1. MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS IS CURABLE!
Don’t believe me? I don’t care and I don’t want to hear about it. Why? See point 2.
2. Attitude is paramount
Things ‘happen’ to victims; people who take responsibility make things happen. If you have Multiple Sclerosis and you feel that you can’t beat it you may as well stop reading because no matter what you do, the Law of Attraction will keep you in your downward spiral until such a time when you ‘know’ that you are destined for a better life. If we can create the perfect environment in our body’s to acquire the disease, by changing the environment we can get rid of it too.
3. People have been cured
There are enough people in the world who have had MS for years with no symptoms to give me reason to believe MS is curable. Pluto was a planet until history was rewritten. How many people need to be cured of MS before the medical dictionaries can be rewritten and MS can be labelled as a curable disease? This brings me to my next point.
Drug companies make more money from sick people than they do from healthy people. From what I have learned, drug companies are responsible for much of what doctors are taught which is why doctors give out drug prescriptions a lot faster than they prescribe healthy lifestyles.
Drugs are used primarily to mask symptoms while the underlying cause for the illness remains. For example, a cold is a symptom of a bug that has over thrown your body’s immune system temporarily and the coughing and runny nose is your body expelling the germs. Taking cold and flu medicine may lessen the effects of the runny nose but the bug is still in your body, and is doing more damage by hanging around longer.
Do you have back or joint pain? Taking pain killers won’t heal the inflammation; it will just mask the pain. The painful inflammation is a symptom of something else that is wrong whether it be a kick in the ankle by a soccer boot, calcium deposits, torn cartilage, gout (which is a symptom of toxicity and malnutrition), etc. Masking the pain with drugs often does more damage because the inflamed area will cop more abuse because the pain is no longer limiting it from being used.
By this logic, taking drugs to suppress Multiple Sclerosis symptoms allows the damage to spread unnoticed. Finding the cause is important, cure the cause and throw away the drugs.
Something like 80% of doctors regret becoming doctors a few years after joining the industry because at the start they just wanted to help people but after years of masking symptoms and watching their patients become sicker and sicker they realise they aren’t helping them at all.
Mercury puts immense stress on your mind and body. Please, please, please get a hair analysis to find out if you have Mercury or any other toxic elements in your body. One of the first things I was asked by natural physicians when I told them I had (‘had’, not ‘have’) MS is “do you have high levels of Mercury?” My answer was: yes, extremely high. Note: Mercury being present in people with MS supports my theory that MS is diagnosed from side effects of the body fighting toxicity through inflammation. I cannot express to you just how dangerous Mercury is to our bodies, so I will let this video do the talking:
There are more places you can get Mercury from than amalgam dental fillings. I have never had amalgam fillings, but I have had vaccinations. Traces of Mercury may also be found in (but not limited to) drinking water and fish.
In the January 2011 edition of the Australian Yoga Journal there is a story about Hillary Rubin, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1996. In time she changed her career from a high stress, fast paced industry to becoming a Yoga teacher. More than 14 years after her diagnosis she is “symptom and medication free”.
Yoga is an excellent way of limbering up your body, stretching areas that never get stretched, detoxifying and gently using muscles that never get used. Tai Chi can bring about similar results to your health and well being as Yoga.
Mediation is a great way of reflecting on your life, finding love and peace within and connecting with your non-physical self. Meditation will help balance your mind and body and reduce stress.
Exercising keeps your muscles working, your nerves firing and your chemicals in balance. Many studies have been made on exercise’s effects on lowering stress levels and detoxifying.
A little time in the sun could save your life. The main source of our Vitamin D comes from the sun. Vitamin D is extremely important for people who wish to be healthy no matter what illness they are trying to avoid or overcome.
According to Dr F Batmanghelidj, dehydration is the cause of most illnesses. Further research indicates that increasing intracellular hydration is extremely important in fighting MS and other illnesses. Your body is 70% water after all. Ask your Physician to check your body hydration percentage if you don’t have bathroom scales that will do this for you. Most people are around the 50% hydration mark rather than the 70% mark. And we wonder why we are sick…
My wife Candice, has taught me the true meaning of unconditional love; she is my inspiration to live a fulfilling and prosperous life. She supports me in all that I want to do and she supports me if I want to quit those same things. She never judges me, she only loves me. Without her support I don’t know if I could pull through the days when I feel like the weight of the world is on top of me. Sometimes she will prepare dinner all by herself when I don’t have the energy (usually it is a team effort) or if I am in self attack mode she will say things to me that I have usually said to her in the past when she has been in a similar mood. Something inspirational or something to jolt me off the path I am on and realign my thoughts in a more positive light.
What I am trying to get at here is sometimes we are strong and sometimes we need more support than a new born baby and it is important to have only supportive people in your life. Whether it is your mum, dad, bother, husband, wife, sister, etc., it doesn’t matter, so long as you are in a supportive environment. If you have a friend or a partner who is poison in your life, cut them out of your life or get counselling, fast. If you are diagnosed with MS your problems are big enough already, you don’t need negative people dragging you down. Choosing who you do and don’t spend time with is liberating.
Work through your issues and find any hidden issues that may be causing stress in your mind and body whether they are fear issues, parent issues, weight issues, etc. Counsellors are trained to help us help ourselves, empowering us to overcome stress.
