Top 5 Eco-friendly Products of February

By Candice Aiken.

Our garden is looking a little sad and crispy at the moment. It could be due to the water restrictions this summer, or it could be the continuous and super harsh 35 – 40 degree days. Either way it is in desperate need of a little TLC. I am extremely particular about what I use inside the house in terms of environmentally friendly and healthy products and that doesn’t stop at my back door.  Here are my top 5 eco-friendly products for the garden:

1. Bamboo Gardening Gloves:

We have had a recent influx of redback spiders into our vegetable garden. They don’t just hide in dark corners anymore; these naughty little things are now nesting in my carrot tops and wandering the luscious dark soil in broad daylight. I would normally be seen walking amongst the veggies barefoot and glove free for the intention of connecting with nature and getting a bit of grounding in. However, after many a screams and close calls, I have reluctantly taken to wearing gloves. These awesome gloves are made from bamboo and certainly tick every eco-friendly box in my books. You can grab a pair from: www.gogreengloves.com

2. Organic Book:

Books are one of my many obsessions. I currently have about 6 on the go right now! If I had any more room in my life to fit another book in, it would definitely be this one. The minute you open the book, you are immersed in all things organic and eco-friendly. It’s the perfect place to go to if you want a slice of the organic life pie whether you live in a tiny apartment, suburban house or are already blessed to live on acres of land. You will learn 80 simple eco projects including how to start a worm farm, plant a tree, grow salad on your window sill, collect rain water and more. Get a copy from: www.biome.com.au

3. Solar Shed Light:

In the years we have been in our house, we have survived quite easily without a garden shed. Lately it is has been on our ‘to do list’ to find and install one, so as soon as it goes in, I am getting myself one of these bad boys! We have an incredible amount of sun in Australia and particularly in Perth so you will never find yourself in the dark scrambling around for tools or whatever bits and bobs you keep in your shed. Order online at: www.todae.com.au

4. Organic Vegetable Seeds:

Organic vegetable garden is so much fun! It’s amazing planting a tiny little seed and then watching over time as it becomes a seedling and then a full grown edible plant. Nature at it’s best! So, what could be more rewarding than this? When you are able to have it all year round! I love the idea of an annual seed subscription where you are sent organic seeds all year round for every season, along with instructions on appropriate planting times and super helpful tips! Subscribe through: www.thinkecoshop.com.au

5. Herb Markers:

Once your seeds go in, you will need to know what you’ve planted. We have made this mistake before and although it’s fun (and also funny) trying to guess what’s growing through, you will have to wait until they are old enough to identify most of the veggies.  You may also spend alot of time on google asking questions such as ‘what has weird pointy shaped leaves?’ and ‘why isn’t my kale or coriander or basil or lettuce growing at all?’. Grab some markers to save you the effort. You can get these awesome vintage upcycled spoon markers from: www.etsy.com
