Exercise!

The Link Between Fitness and Total Wellness

*** Guest Post By Jim Rollince. ***

Health experts have long suspected that a person’s overall state of wellness is directly linked to how much exercise he or she gets on a daily basis. In fact, recent studies support the notion that daily exercise and general good health are closely related and indeed should benefit each other.

However, many people today often find it difficult to make time in their schedules for exercising everyday. They spend too much time at work and devote too much energy to their busy routines rather than getting any physical activity. As such, more and more people are being diagnosed with conditions such as depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other ailments. Many experts agree that most of today’s health challenges can be overcome simply with regular exercise.

The benefits of exercise:

The most obvious benefit of daily exercising is of course its ability to help people maintain a healthy weight. Adults and children alike are encouraged to get at least one hour’s worth of exercise everyday. This short amount of physical activity helps burn off excess calories, increases metabolism, and improves digestion. If you exercise everyday and often, you do not have the added worry about gaining extra kgs or fat because your body is able to consume the calories from your diet.

A less noted benefit from exercising everyday, however, is its ability to relieve stress, elevate moods, and improve depressive episodes. Fitness.gov reports, scientists have long observed that physical activity helps the body make hormones that are needed to maintain a person’s mental wellness. When these hormones are produced and maintained within a healthy balance, you will feel more at ease and not experience the emotional turmoil that many people experience today.

Further, working out everyday allows you to take a break from your work life and busy schedule. Using home gym equipment such as treadmills and ellipticals can be a fun way to escape the day’s pressures and forget about upcoming work and obligations. As you are required to concentrate on making these machines operate correctly, you may not be worrying about and thinking of other things.

What else can you do for exercise?

If you do not want to work out at a gym or with gym equipment at your home, you may wonder what else you can do that allows you to be physically active. In fact, fitness experts note that many activities qualify as ‘exercise’. Today, both men and women are realising the health benefits that can be gained from dancing to name one. Many community and recreation centers offer dance classes that encourage people to exercise and have fun at the same time.

Of course, you may not feel comfortable about dancing in front of others, so you can choose to walk briskly around your neighborhood every day. Walking at a brisk pace allows you to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and perhaps even meet some of your neighbours.

Whatever you chose to do… get out there today and start exercising!
